Tours at 1:00 and 2:30 p.m. Meet at landfill office.

Examine present and future waste disposal during the tour of the working face of an active landfill cell, construction of a new cell, exploration of landfill by-products, and drive-through of 80 acres of closed and capped landfill.

The seminary’s most recent “Green construction” highlights include geothermal ground source heat pump, daylight-maximizing windows, water-saving plumbing fixtures, recycled materials, green space conservation, labyrinth, shower facility for commuting cyclists and campus garden.

Hudson-Sterling Neighborhood Garden

Community garden, offered by the City of Elkhart’s EnviroCorps program, provides plots for local gardeners.  Many gardeners participate in the Plant-A-Row program and provide fresh vegetables for local soup kitchens.

Elkhart Environmental Education Center

Reclaimed garbage dump is now part of a 140-acre River Greenway trail system. Uses geothermal energy to heat and cool the education center, recently upgraded to water furnace; also features green roof made of 70 percent postindustrial waste.
